It was a gala evening to reminisce, celebrate and look forward for Canadian alumni in Singapore, graduates who studied in universities across Canada, from University of Victoria in Vancouver Island to Memorial University in Newfoundland, from the 1960s to 2009.
Guest-of-Honour, Dr Su Guaning, President of Nanyang Technological University, recalled the long journey to Canada as a teenager in the 1960s, the excitement of seeing the first snowfall, experiencing subzero temperatures as a student in University of Alberta, and the beauty of Canada from the Rocky Mountains to the maritime provinces. Most memorable was the excellent education which continues to draw Singaporeans to study in Canada, and is reflected in many collaborations between Singapore and Canadian universities.
To mark the milestone of its 30th anniversary, the Canadian Alumni Singapore Singapore launched the Singapore-Canada Learning Exchange (SCLE) which will facilitate the sharing of knowledge and experience between Canadians and Singaporeans in all areas of life.
Fund-raising efforts to build up the SCLE Fund have been generously supported with contributions from alumni, donors such as the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Manulife Financial, Scotiabank, and sponsors for a raffle draw - Fairmont Singapore, Marrama Valley Wines, Marina Mandarin, Pan Pacific Singapore, Pictures & Pixels, RIM Blackberry, Sheraton Towers, StarHub, The Regent Singapore, Four Seasons Singapore, and many more,. Other generous sponsors contributing to the Reunion include Andersen’s Ice Cream, Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd, Bata, Canon, Makeover Inc, and NTUC FairPrice
Canadian Alumni Singapore was formed in 1979 with the objective to bring past and recent Canadian graduates closer together. There are over 13,000 Canadian alumni working and living in Singapore today, a wonderfully diverse group of individuals from the private, public and people sectors including many senior alumni who have contributed immeasurably to the pioneering years of Singapore’s national development and growth.
